The Nose

September 15, 2013 by Rachel Bostwick

Julius Arthur

Four children, three boys.

All the boys have been curly-headed little blondies with long lashes and bright blue eyes.

If you look at their baby pictures, it’s hard to tell them apart.

Except for this nose. Julius Arthur has this different nose.

Moody

September 15, 2013 by Rachel Bostwick

Halloween

“You’re not really moody,” my mother said.

Really?

My mother thinks that I am not moody.

Some mornings I hesitate to even get out of bed. I pull the covers up to my neck and close my eyes, thinking about anything but real life.

But my mother thinks I am laid back.

I guess I am doing a good job at hiding it.

One Dark Midnight

September 15, 2013 by Rachel Bostwick

dgonon dark midnights
they say he rises
a summer flight
full of surprises

swooping low
and rising high
rushing up
to touch the sky

breath of flame
and scales of blue
i can fly
as fast as you

dip and soar
and touch the moon
the summer sun
comes all too soon

One Dark Midnight
he’ll come for me
i’m still waiting
but you will see

One Dark Midnight
come for me
through the cavern
over the sea

One Dark Midnight
black by blue
we’ll soar away
me and you

The Star

September 15, 2013 by Rachel Bostwick

I once thought love was infinite, and days could never end,
But now it’s night and you’re content to call me just a friend.
My rage and passion faded, like the sunset from the skies.
The twilight drear has come and gone, like tears gone from my eyes.

I know this trembling stillness means the dawn is far away,
And purple night is nothing like the periwink of day,
But deep within my darkened heart, a memory glad and bright,
Emerges like a single star upon the face of night.

Ending Ends

September 15, 2013 by Rachel Bostwick

do not mourn
The Last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Do not mourn, fair daughter, for days gone by,
Though the moment we’re born, we begin to die.
Like a thief in the night, eternity descends,
Making good the bad and ending ends.
This death you fear will be no more,
With each moment better than the one before.
All are drinking ever in, and ever pouring out.
Every love is given freely. Every joyful shout,
Is as joyfully answered. All are joyfully loved,
By that great blessed Lover who dwells above.
Every fear will be banished, every foe cast away,
And the darkness of night will be changed into day.
